What will I major in?
Choosing major in university is one of the most momentous decisions in my whole
life. Studying ideal major can help me to realize my dream. “What is your dream?”
is a typical essay in local primary school. To be frank, I think our dream is depends
on experience you had but not pure imagination. I am in a dilemma choosing
Psychology or Social Work as my major.
Through doing the career research, I found out that I am suitable for career related
to socialize and serve the society. Suddenly, memories become a movie showing in
my brain. In my primary school, everyone has a chance to take up a post to serve
others. My friends chose to be librarians as they thought the tasks were relaxing.
They prefer working with books instead of communicating with others. At the same
time, I raised my hand straightly and nominated myself to be a “small teacher” for
the junior form students. I found teaching them with their homework was really
enjoyable and satisfied. Starting from that moment, I figure out I like interacting with
people rather than lifeless machines and objects.
My other habit is spending the whole afternoon in a library to read psychology
book becomes part of my life. People may think theories insides bore them to
death. Actually, the theories are all applicable to our daily lives such as explaining
why people would like standing at the corners when they enter a lift ─ these books
satisfy my curiosity about human behavior. In addition, I become more sensitive to
the people around me in psychological aspect. So I would like to further my studies
about Psychology in university.
Psychology is really powerful and lights up my future road. Especially when
psychological theories are applied in social work aspect, they become much more
practical.
Starting from secondary three, volunteer work has been appearing on my schedule.
I experienced position ranging from participant to organizer in volunteer work. A
sea of impressive experiences makes up me. When I was in secondary four, my
classmates and I organized a volunteer project in our community. At first, we
thought that we could directly serve the needy. However, we figured out we have
to understand people’s need first. We advocated installing a lift for the elderly
people as they have to walk along stairs every day. After walking on long stairs, we
feel how tiring the elderly feel every day. One year later, I was so pleasant to be
one of the young envoys of the UNICEF and outstanding young volunteer of Social
Welfare Department. Thus, I had valuable chances to go to Gansu and Taiwan. These
experiences intensify my passion for doing volunteer work only as I see people smile
and laugh. I can also apply the psychological theories practically such as how to get
along well with participants.
Recently, I went to Mong Kok to visit the homeless with HKFYG. It was the first
time for me to visit their specially designed ‘home’ under the footbridge. Through
chatting with the homeless, they were really nice to us like giving us a lecture about
life. Although we had to squat instead of having a comfortable seat, we were really
enjoy it. I would say it is the most meaningful and impressive lecture for me. They
are strong and determined even though their situation were poor. At that moment,
I felt like an angel delivered a task for my whole life. I dare not to say I can save their
lives but make a small change in their lives. At least, they know that someone is
willing to give them a helping hand or just simply care about them. I am determined
to step up for the society rather than read psychology books in my comfort zone.
The above experience in my life does change my career direction. Although I really
love Psychology since I was small, I would instead major in social work to apply
psychological theories to help the needy. I believe ‘Everyone has mission in his/her
life.’ My mission is to make a small change in our society and work with others to
make our home become a better place to live. It is just like a simple butterfly flap of
wings can cause a typhoon. Thus, everyone can smile wholeheartedly.

University English -- Descriptive Essay Draft 1
An elegant fairy hangs out with four naughty
spirits and carries a sweet smile on her face every day. The sunshine is stolen
for us, making us grow healthily and delightedly. Unlike the one in fairy tales,
colorful and sexy clothes are not in her wardrobe. However, she is the most glamorous
and prettiest fairy in my heart. Spirits are lying on her transparent wings.
The sound of snoring and tooth grinding can be heard as loud as thunder. She is
the glorious gift for spirits.
‘Hey! Nice to see you here for the fourth time!
Fingers-crossed! ’an aged nurse,
hair as white as snow said. Her fingers kissed the baby in Fairy’s belly. The earthquake of pain burst out in her body
making her travel from death and existence.‘Dare to chase me or not?’Spirits provoke each other with a sinister smile. World War
III is likely to happen with advanced weapons such as eraser’s crusts and paper
planes. Spirits’ energy can be used as unlimited renewable energy. The fairy
sits quietly to be the unique observer of this war. Her blood never rushes to
skin no matter how naughty they are. This abnormal behavior becomes a brake for
our car. The spirits look at each other and their faces turn pale. They know
that it is time to have a lesson.
Hide-and-seek is usually arranged in Spirits’ schedule. Opening
Fairy’s wardrobe, it looks like a new displayed one, containing few clothes, sewed several times. The holes become bigger and
bigger with more and more threads. Most
importantly, a‘sequela’comes along with her, making her become portly
and pot-bellied. At night, she takes out a photo secretly with sadness. The
photo captured a fair lady with angelic face and slender figure. Throwing out
lots of tartan or flowered dresses, filling in net-colored T-shirt and jeans,
makes her tears run out silently. Her tears are dismissed in a hurry. Broom
occupied her hands as usual, tidying and cleaning the home. Her body complains
frequently by knocking her bones and muscles.Even though a sea of sweat appears on her face, her body does not have the plan to stop.
Surprisingly, her mouth is the most docile. The kitchen is her unique laboratory,‘inventing’tones of fantastic dishes by mixing different ingredients. ‘Flying milk successfully invented!’she yelled with joy and satisfaction. Spirits finally heave a
great sigh after eating scorching milk for a month. Luckily, they are all safe
for our stomach!
Our hands are being held tightly, as
the warmth in spring. Instead of patrolling seriously above our heads like a helicopter, Fairy’s
bare hands as slim as threads open a bluish sky for us to fly.‘Let’s see who can fly higher!’A competitive spirit, flying above me teases me. ‘No worries! Just do your best and take a rest !’my Fairy said secretly near my ears. Lying on her wings is my
fuel to fly. In the morning of Chinese New Year, she takes out four sets of new
traditional Chinese clothing from a red box delightedly. Even though our family has to work very hard to make ends meet, her persistence
does not go away. Her smile is mild and eyes mist with joy due to our satisfied
faces. Sometimes, magician is her identity, allowing us to pursue our dream
with infinite support. Her unlimited love and care are evenly allocated to us
beyond consideration.
Simplicity is a noun describing this Fairy. Although she is middle-aged
physically, her behavior has no difference compared with a child. Walking
through a street where a beggar is lying, water droplets fall frequently on my
head. Surprisingly, it is not raining. They are tears of this sympathetic fairy.
Thus, saving up pocket money for the needy is a habit taught by her.
Becoming one of the naughty spirits, protecting and being
cared by my dear Fairy is my greatest pleasure. I do hope I can live with her
delightedly every day. One day, the four puny saplings will become strong and
green trees. Our Fairy can take a nap underneath.
